Karadzic due in court today

03/11/2009 - 12:31:14
Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic is due to appear in the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal's court today for the first time since his trial began on charges of ordering atrocities throughout the Bosnian war.

Karadzic boycotted the trial's first three days, saying he had not had enough time to prepare his defense, even though he was charged in 1995.

Presiding Judge O-Gon Kwon has scheduled a hearing today to discuss how to proceed with the trial if Karadzic continues his boycott. Karadzic is defending himself but the three-judge panel is considering imposing a defense lawyer on him.

In a letter to judges released by the UN court yesterday Karadzic said he will attend the hearing to help find a way out of the stalemate.
