Plan mooted to ease pressure on Dublin surgeries

02/11/2009 - 12:40:56
A plan to ease cancellations of surgery in hospitals in the greater Dublin area has been revealed.

The national orthopaedic hospital at Cappagh says if some surgeries were carried out at its facility, it would ease pressure in many other hospitals.

However, it is understood the HSE has no capital funding for the project.

CEO at Cappagh Aidan Gleeson said there would be many benefits to patients if some surgeries were carried out there.

"We don't have cancellations here in Cappagh, because we don't have an A&E department - and that is the key to all of this" he said.

"If you were to take the likes of cataract operations or varicose veins operations to this site, they wouldn't be cancelled- they'd be done when they were suppose to have been done as planned. That is the biggest plus for the patient."
