1,500 pubs shut in five years - report

A major survey on the drinks industry due to be published today is expected to show that more than 1,500 pubs have closed down in five years.

The study, by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland, will highlight the dramatic fall in revenue and mounting costs to employers.

DIGI represents manufacturers, hotels and nightclubs, as well as publicans.

Their survey is the largest of the sector to be undertaken in Ireland. One in three rural pubs surveyed said they would struggle to survive in the future.
