A man stabbed to death on a street in north Belfast earlier today has been named as 29-year-old homeless man George Morrison.

Morrison was found lying in Brookhill Avenue in the north of the city in the early hours of this morning.

A 46-year-old man has been arrested, police said. Detectives believe there may have been a row before the attack at around 2.30am.

Local DUP MP Nigel Dodds said: “It is shocking to hear that a man has been killed in a knife attack in north Belfast.

“This is an appalling tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased.

“This incident must intensify opposition to the carrying and use of knives which too often has tragic consequences.”

The victim is understood to be homeless but stayed with an aunt from time to time. He suffered several stab wounds.

Nationalist SDLP Assembly member Alban Maginness expressed regret.

“The man was found not far from my constituency office and it was a shock to learn how he had been discovered,” he said.

“This is an unfortunate incident and will cause a lasting impact on the families involved. It has really shocked the local community.

“I express my condolences to the family and friends of the bereaved and hope the incident is an isolated one and urge anyone with information to pass it on to the police.”

Anybody with information is asked to go to the police.
