German barman jailed for deadly drinking match

A German court has sentenced a Berlin barkeeper to three years and five months in prison after he was convicted of bodily harm with fatal consequences for a drinking match that left his teenage opponent dead.

Aytac Guzelarslan apologised ahead of today’s trial to the family of 16-year-old Lukas Wels, who died after he served him more than 45 shots of tequila while filling his own glass mostly with water.

A Berlin health official called the 2007 drinking death “a warning to society”.
