Bord Snip Nua to hold final meeting
30/06/2009 - 09:59:50The group set up by the Government to recommend ways to cut public spending is due to hold its final meeting today before submitting its findings to the Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan.
The six-member body, which has been dubbed An Bord Snip Nua, is expected to recommend sweeping measures to reduce Government spending by between €5bn and €7bn annually.
It is widely expected to recommend cuts in rent supplement and the possible taxing or means-testing of child benefit payments.
It is also expected to propose cutting public-service employment numbers by between 20,000 and 30,000.
The Cabinet will have to decide whether to approve or veto the various proposals, but any decisions are not expected until autumn at the earliest.
