Former U21 captain to start for Galway

28/05/2009 - 08:26:07
Galway will give former U21 captain Kevin Hynes his debut in the hurling championship when they face Laois in the Leinster SHC on Sunday.

The U21 All-Ireland winning captain missed last year’s championship after breaking his jaw playing for his club Sarsfields.

Aonghus Callanan, a substitute for Galway in the championship before, will also start his first championship match.

Ollie Canning will captain the side, which shows six changes from that which went down to Cork in the All-Ireland qualifiers last year, with younger brother Joe at full-forward.

Andy Smith will partner Hynes in midfield, while in attack Damian Hayes will start at top of the right with cousin Kevin Hayes at centre-forward.

John Lee, who opted out of the league campaign to concentrate on his medical studies, is selected at centre-back.

There is no place in the Galway attack for former All-Star Ger Farragher or Alan Kerins, who was recently recalled to the panel.

GALWAY (SH v Laois): C Callanan; D Joyce, S Kavanagh, O Canning; F Moore, J Lee, A Cullinane; K Hynes, A Smith; A Callanan, K Hayes, C Donnellan; D Hayes, J Canning, N Healy.
