Derry back on form

Sammy Morrow scored twice at Terryland Park as Derry got back to winning ways to move to within a point of second-placed Bohemians.

Galway started brightly and midfielder Dave Cooke’s speculative ball into the area looped over keeper Ger Doherty and came back off the post after just two minutes.

Derry slowly got into the game, though, and Morrow missed a gilt edged chance on 24 minutes, somehow heading wide from six yards from Eddie McCallion’s cross.

But Morrow soon made amends to give Derry the lead on 35 minutes. Galway lost possession in midfield and Kevin Deery and Mark Farren worked the ball to Morrow who shot past Barry Ryan for his first goal of the season.

Morrow fired home his second early in the second half from a penalty after Michael McGrath was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball on the edge of the area.

Substitute David Scullion sealed the points with Derry’s third goal on 64 minutes, flicking home Gareth McGlynn’s cross.
