Global downturn undermining human rights
28/05/2009 - 09:28:39Amnesty International says the global economic crisis is undermining human rights in many countries across the world, including in Ireland.
Amnesty's Irish branch says cutbacks at the Equality Authority and the Irish Human Rights Commission are just one example of how the downturn is hampering the protection of human rights.
Amnesty's latest global report also highlights the Irish Government's ongoing failure to hold a referendum on children's rights.
On a global level, the organisation says freedom of expression is still restricted in 81 countries, while half of all countries inflict torture or ill treatment on people during interrogation.
Nearly 80% of all executions are carried out in G20 nations.
