Cowen assured that Obama policies will not affect Irish jobs
18/03/2009 - 07:22:53The Taoiseach says President Barack Obama has assured him that job creation by American firms in Ireland will not suffer as a result of the new US administration's tax policies in relation to companies operating abroad.
There have been fears that a protectionist approach by the Obama administration - aimed at keeping jobs and money in the American economy - could lead to jobs being pulled out of Ireland by US firms.
However, speaking after his meeting with President Obama yesterday, Brian Cowen said he had been assured that this wouldn't happen.
He also said he had discussed the emigration issue with Mr Obama.
Mr Cowen spent last night in the company of the US President and his wife Michelle at a special reception to mark St Patrick's Day.
