The Consumers' Association is calling for a ban on junk food advertising before the 9pm watershed.

As part of a joint campaign with the Children's Rights Alliance, the group is urging Communications Minister Eamon Ryan to enact the 2008 Broadcasting Bill.

It contains provisions to restrict the advertising of food and drinks to children that are considered to be unhealthy.

Up to 350,000 children in Ireland are overweight or obese.
