HSE publishes review of mid-west hospital services

12/01/2009 - 07:31:45
The HSE has officially released a controversial report into the reorganisation of hospital services in the mid-west region.

The report by independent consultants says a 24-hour A&E service should be provided at only one hospital in the region, the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

It also recommends the centralisation of major surgery, critical care and obstetrics at the same hospital.

Leaked details of the review have already been met with widespread local opposition.

Labour Party Senator Alan Kelly says the findings don't make sense as the A&E at the Mid Western Regional Hospital is already struggling to cope and is not capable of treating more than 30,000 extra patients.
