Age Action: Carers' allowance must be exempt from cuts
12/01/2009 - 16:01:33Age Action is appealing to the Government to exempt the carers' allowance from possible cuts in social welfare payments.
Minister Mary Hanafin has warned that the allowance could be targeted by the new 'Bord Snip', as it attempts to recoup money to pump into the budget deficit.
The group claims any cuts in the carers allowance would hit the most vulnerable people in society.
It says the payments are means tested and only go to carers on low incomes.
