Posh and Becks give satirical comedy red card

12/01/2009 - 18:16:02
Posh and Becks won’t be flying in to town to catch a Shakespeare-inspired comedy based on their glamorous lives, it emerged tonight.

The celebrity duo will miss the portrayal of their glamorous lives in Ireland’s latest football musical which premieres in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre this week.

Penned by 'I Keano' veterans Gary Cooke and Malachy McKenna, 'Macbecks' features the world’s most famous footballer, his fashion icon pop star wife, their global brand, and the trials and tribulations surrounding their marriage, his manager, and his bendy ball.

But unsurprisingly, David and Victoria Beckham – who married in Ireland in 1999 - won’t be flying back in to the capital for the show.

Executive producer Ronan Smith said the pair had been invited: “But we haven’t heard from them yet.”

However, a spokesman for the Beckhams said no invite had been received and that the couple would not be attending.

Mr Smith said 'Macbecks' isn’t an attack on the famous husband and wife.

“There is nothing in the show that anybody would take as a serious point or allegation. It’s so completely madcap. It’s plainly satire,” he added.

Depicting classic 16th century scenes from Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and King Lear, the production follows the famous Brand Beckham. It even features a host of football veterans in ’Ye Olde Wags Head’ and group of spicy young ladies, who star alongside Poshoria in her girl band.

It is hoped the global attraction of Brand Beckham, and recent success of 'I Keano', could see the production go on tour across the world.

The talented scriptwriters said they were touring with 'I Keano' in October 2005 when they started thinking up the Beckham storyline and went from men in togas to men in tights.

But they were quick to reassure the audience the musical is not a step by step guide to the stylish couple’s life.

“If you want to read about the Beckhams you can pick up any magazine,” said Malachy.

“This is not retelling their story. It’s away from reality.

“People would just get very bored if you just repeated history.

“We’ve had a lot of fun in rehearsals but it also hard work.”
