Farrell and Byrne scoop Golden Globes

12/01/2009 - 07:05:47
Irish actors fared well at last night's Golden Globe awards, with Colin Farrell pipping his 'In Bruges' co-star Brendan Gleeson to win the gong for best actor in a musical or comedy and Gabriel Byrne taking the best actor in a television drama category for US psychotherapy show 'In Treatment'.

Arts Minister Martin Cullen has congratulated the pair, saying their success and the nomination of several other Irish artists show that Ireland has some of the best talent in the industry.

The big winner at the 66th annual Golden Globes held in Beverly Hills was Danny Boyle's feelgood film 'Slumdog Millionaire', which won all four categories for which it was nominated, including best picture.

“Golden Globes, or the GGs as we very affectionately refer to them – your mad, pulsating affection for our film is much appreciated. Really, deeply appreciated,” Boyle said.

The best actor: Drama Globe went to Mickey Rourke for 'The Wrestler', while Kate Winslet took two awards - best actress and best supporting actress - for 'Revolutionary Road' and 'The Reader'.

“I’m so sorry,” she told her fellow nominees. “Is this really happening?”

Steven Spielberg was honoured with the Globes’ Cecil B DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.`

The foreign-language film prize went to Israel’s 'Waltz With Bashir' – director Ari Forman’s animated documentary about a soldier struggling to recall suppressed memories of his involvement in the war with Lebanon.

A year ago, industrial action by the Writers Guild of America shut down the Globes, the town’s second-biggest movie celebration after the Academy Awards, but organisers promised their show would be back, bigger and better than ever.

A looser, more relaxed affair than the Oscars, the Globes are a televised dinner party where Hollywood’s elite share a meal and drinks, sometimes cutting loose with unexpected antics – Jack Nicholson once mooned to the crowd for a laugh.

The Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 90 reporters covering showbusiness for overseas outlets.
