Award honour for Irish agent to the stars

12/01/2009 - 15:54:32
A Co Clare-born agent to the stars will be honoured at a special ceremony next month paying tribute to the Irish in the film industry.

Hylda Queally, whose clients include Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett and Penelope Cruz, will receive an award at the US-Ireland Alliance’s ’Oscar Wilde: Honouring the Irish in Film’.

Ms Winslet, who last night scooped two Golden Globe awards and thanked Ms Queally in her acceptance speech, will present the accolade at the fourth annual gala event in Los Angeles.

Trina Vargo, President of the US-Ireland Alliance, said she had succeeded brilliantly in a tough business.

“I had to work to convince her (Ms Queally) to allow us to honour her as she is a private person who is very focused on promoting those she represents,” Ms Vargo said.

“It helped once she learned what the US-Ireland Alliance and the event are all about.”

Gemma Hayes, Laura Izibor and Republic of Loose will also perform at the ceremony, which has become of showcase for Irish singers.

After taking part in the event in 2006, Paddy Casey and SJ McArdle landed US recording deals.

The ceremony, which was organised to bring together people in the Irish and US film industries, will be held on February 19.
