Jenkins returns to Scarlets
Gareth Jenkins will return to Llanelli Scarlets in a new role as head of regional development and recruitment.
The 56-year-old former Wales coach will start work with the Scarlets this month.
He left Llanelli in 2006 to become Wales boss but was dismissed after a dismal World Cup campaign last autumn that saw his team knocked out during the pool stage.
Jenkins has kept a low profile since his axing by the Welsh Rugby Union, although he had been linked to various coaching jobs.
Jenkins’ new post will cover areas such as academy development and player recruitment.
He previously spent 10 years as Llanelli’s director of rugby, a reign which included taking the Scarlets to several Heineken Cup quarter-finals and two semi-finals.
Jenkins said: “I am delighted to be coming back to the Scarlets.
“This is an exciting opportunity and a vitally important role in the region. It’s the second part of a big equation where regional development provides vital support to team performance.”
Scarlets chief executive Stuart Gallacher added: “When we reviewed the rugby side of our business, it was quite clear that regional development required separate focus and leadership from that of coaching and performance.
“I cannot think of anyone better qualified or experienced for this job. This is a massive boost to our relationship with grassroots rugby.
“Gareth knows this region like no other, and he has excellent contacts that will benefit the Scarlets and all those linked to us.”
