Fishermen to tie up vessels in fuel-price protest
05/06/2008 - 08:05:58Fishermen are planning to tie up their vessels in ports around the country today as part of a protest over rising fuel costs.
Fishing organisations are also set to stage a protest outside the Dáil in Dublin to highlight the threat posed to their livelihoods by spiralling diesel prices.
The Federation of Irish Fishermen says it is no longer economically viable for its members to stay in business because 70% of their operating costs are spent on fuel alone.
The fishermen say they are not looking for fuel subsidies, but expect the Government to take some action to address the situation.
