A patient at a Dublin hospital for older people has died after developing an acute flu virus.

According to the Health Service Executive a number of patients at St Ita's in Portrane developed acute flu-like symptoms earlier this month.

One patient was transferred to Beaumont Hospital on March 16 after the illness worsened.

The patient died the following day.

Seven other patients from the same ward were also transferred to Beaumont, one of whom remains in intensive care.

The HSE says infection control procedures are in place, including visiting restrictions.

No similar cases have been reported on other wards.
