A couple in their 20s remain in garda custody this morning in connection with the murder of an off-duty taxi driver in west Dublin earlier this week.

The man and woman were arrested last night and are being detained at Cabra and Blanchardstown Garda Stations.

Mark Smyth of Duleek in County Meath was stabbed to death in the front garden of a house in Blanchardstown on Tuesday night.

The off-duty taxi driver is understood to have driven a couple in their 20s from Clonee, Co Meath to the Fortlawn estate when a row ensued after he pulled his car into a cul-de-sac.

The victim fled his vehicle but was apprehended and stabbed repeatedly to the chest and neck and left to die.

The attack was witnessed by Mr Smyth's partner and child who were also travelling in his company.

The couple can be held for up to 24 hours after which they must either be released or charged.
