Gun crime high on agenda at AGSI annual conference
18/03/2008 - 07:50:39Gangland crime and the increasing use of firearms by criminals will be high on the agenda at the annual conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors this week.
Delegates are due to hear details of proposed armed Regional Response Units, staffed by uniformed officers, which could respond quickly to incidents involving guns.
The units would be deployed to the scene pending the arrival of the specialised Emergency Response Unit.
The AGSI says it wants to hear if its members support the proposal or prefer the existing structure whereby only plain-clothed gardaí can carry firearms.
