Mahon launches bitter attack on Ahern’s legal team
The chairman of the Mahon Tribunal has launched a scathing attack on the Taoiseach's legal team as Bertie Ahern prepares to answer more questions at the tribunal today.
The row erupted after Judge Alan Mahon ruled against Mr Ahern in relation to the disclosure of certain documents held by the tribunal.
The Taoiseach's lawyer, Conor Maguire, attracted the ire of Judge Mahon after he asked if the tribunal's legal team had any involvement in the decision.
The judge asked him to withdraw the allegation, saying: "We have never conducted our work in any way that could be seen to be controlled by our counsel."
He told Mr Maguire: "You are saying we're corrupt, you're saying we're crooks, that we're conducting a witch-hunt. You're saying that these three judges are out on some sort of a frolic of their own, to do down people in a way which is unconstitutional, unfair and criminal."
Judge Mahon told Mr Maguire: "If you have views about unprofessional conduct, you should have gone to the High Court long ago."
The tribunal then adjourned for 10 minutes to allow everyone to calm down.
