Labour tables motion of confidence in Mahon Tribunal

07/01/2008 - 16:09:18
The Labour Party has tabled a Dáil motion of confidence in the Mahon Tribunal.

Deputy leader Joan Burton said they had taken the step because of sustained attacks by the Taoiseach and government ministers on the tribunal.

Deputy Burton said it was vital the tribunal completes the mandate given to it by the Dáil and Seanad.

“We believe that it's important that the work of the tribunal should conclude, that we should get an explanation for how all of these various sums of money came to be in the Taoiseach's possession and in his various accounts eventually.”

“We want the Dáil to re-affirm confidence in the tribunal and let the tribunal get on with completing its work.”

The move follows comments made by Bertie Ahern over the weekend. The Taoiseach said he believed he wasn’t getting a fair hearing from the inquiry.

He said the Mahon Tribunal failed to act to stop the persistent disclosure of his private documentation.
