Drink driving crackdown catches 43 people a day

Up to 43 motorists a day were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving between Christmas Eve and December 30, gardaí said today.

Provisional figures showed a total of 301 incidents were recorded during the seven day period compared to 357 the previous week.

A Garda spokesman said: “Enforcement activities will continue to be prioritised in this area of road safety.”

The Operation Freeflow crackdown on seasonal traffic congestion in Dublin ended on Friday.

AA Roadwatch today reported that normal traffic volumes had returned to cities and towns today as schools and businesses and construction staff returned to work.

Any roadworks that were suspended during the holiday period also began again.
