Listener far from disgraced - Jacob

02/01/2008 - 14:27:55
Daryl Jacob believes The Listener performed with great credit in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown last week.

The Robert Alner-trained grey was beaten just over four lengths in third place behind Denman and was caught on the line for second by Mossbank.

“There is no disgrace in getting beat four lengths by Denman,” said Jacob.

“We went over there wanting to beat him, we tried to beat him, and it has probably cost us second place in the end as he got tired in the last 150 yards.

“To be beaten four lengths by Denman is a good show.

“It was the plan to go slow early because my horse is not an out-and-out three-mile stayer, he is a two-and-a-half-mile horse.

“We weren’t going to beat Denman by going a good gallop, Denman was always going to outstay us.

“So we changed the tactics and tried to beat him for a change of toe and to be fair we were there two out but Denman picked up like the superstar he is.

“We gave it a good shot, it was a good performance to only be beaten four lengths by the second-favourite for the Gold Cup,” he told At The Races.
