Iseq has positive morning

The Iseq index of shares has had a positive start to the new year with a 54-point increase by 11am this morning.

The Dublin stock exchange stands at 6,988.58.

The biggest push came from pharmaceutical giant Elan which lifted itself by 48c to €15.28, while food group Kerry saw its stock climb 30c to €22.

Insurance firm FBD Holdings floated upwards by 25c to €25.50 while Paddy Power soared 24c to €22.75.

The financials had a mixed morning with Irish Life and Permanent climbing 14c to €11.95 and AIB up three cents to €15.71, while Anglo Irish Bank fell two cents to €10.91. Bank of Ireland went up 11c to €10.31.

Construction rivals Grafton and CRH both experienced rises of 10c and 13c to €5.50 and €23.98 respectively.
