Economist seeks stamp duty cuts

Friends First economist Jim Power is calling on the Minister for Finance to take measures to prop up the ailing property market in this year's budget.

Mr Power wants Brian Cowen to reform stamp duty in order to reverse the recent decline in house prices.

He says the slowdown in the sector will accelerate in 2008 if stamp duty rates and bands are not reformed.

Mr Power is also calling for an expansionary budget next month to boost economic growth.
