Bhutto's mass protest banned
12/11/2007 - 15:47:52Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto will not be allowed to hold her planned protest procession across Pakistan, the government announced today.
The march would contravene a ban on political rallies imposed under the current state of emergency, a government spokesman said.
“All processions, rallies and political gatherings at present are outlawed,” deputy information minister Tariq Azim said. “So if she breaks the law then obviously she will not be allowed to do it.”
Ms Bhutto was due to depart from the eastern city of Lahore tomorrow morning for the capital, Islamabad.
The journey was expected to take about three days, and her party said thousands of supporters were expected to join her en route.
