Report calls for better support for lone parents
12/11/2007 - 10:10:39A new report is calling for urgent changes in supports for lone parents to help them escape the poverty trap and get back to work.
The report by the One Parent Family Research Steering Group in Galway says many single parents want to return to work, but are concerned about the impact it would have on their children.
A survey in Galway has found that they face difficulties finding suitable part-time employment, as well as affordable and accessible childcare.
The rent allowance system is also identified as a barrier because many parents would lose the payment if they returned to the workforce.
