Harney defends Drumm over cancer misdiagnoses
05/11/2007 - 11:33:14Minister for Health Mary Harney has rejected claims that the head of the HSE is washing his hands of the misdiagnosis scandal in Portlaoise Hospital.
Seven women were originally told they did not have cancer, only to be told subsequently that they do.
Nineteen others are awaiting the result of a re-examination of their mammograms.
Over the weekend, HSE chief executive Brendan Drumm said it was ironic that the system which caused the misdiagnosis is being defended by the public and by doctors as part of their campaign against the centralisation of cancer services
Speaking this morning, Ms Harney said that, if these reforms were introduced, the problem may never have arisen.
