Slim lead for Hayes in Florida
J.P. Hayes carded an opening round seven-under-par 65 today to open up a one stroke lead at the season-ending Children's Miracle Network Classic.
Hayes, playing on the longer Magnolia course, signed for eight birdies - including five on the back nine - to open a slender advantage over Cameron Beckman, Scott Verplank and Japan's Ryuji Imada.
He birdied three of his first four holes before enduring his only blemish on the day with a bogey on the sixth hole.
Beckman, also playing on the Magnolia course, started on the back nine and was five-under at the turn after shooting an eagle at his first hole of the round.
He also reeled off nine straight pars before closing his round with a birdie at the par-four ninth.
At the Palm course, Verplank and Imada also enjoyed a bogey-free round to sit a further stroke clear of a group of eight on five-under.
