Boy, 16, on bail for pelting security guard with stones
A 16-year-old boy, who knocked out a man’s tooth and broke three more when he pelted him with rocks, has been remanded on bail pending sentence by Judge Ann Ryan at the Dublin Children’s Court.
The boy, who was accompanied to court by his father, yesterday pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to a security man, at a construction site, in Poppentree, Ballymun, in Dublin, on October 22 last. He also admitted another charge for criminally damaging vehicles during the same incident.
Garda Niall Minnock of Ballymun station said “youths attacked security men at a building site at Poppentree community centre.”
One of the men was hit on the mouth by a rock and needed medical help.
“He was left with three broken teeth and one was knocked out,” the court had also heard.
Some €400 worth of damages were caused to vehicles at the site.
Judge Ryan noted from a medical report that the victim had suffered serious injuries and could need cosmetic surgery.
Defence solicitor Michelle Finan said the boy had no previous convictions and had not come to further Garda notice. He came from a good family and was under the control of his father who was outraged his son had been involved in the incident.
The boy, who is in full-time employment had been drunk at the time. He is remorseful and willing to pay compensation to his victim.
Judge Ryan said the boy was lucky the victim did not suffer more serious injuries and also added that the case could have been sent forward to the Circuit Court which can impose lengthier sentences than the Children’s Court.
She noted his guilty plea and remorse but adjourned sentencing until December to allow a Probation Service report to be obtained.
