Ahern: '€300 pension promise will be honoured'

The Taoiseach has said that the pre-election promises for an increase in the state pension to €300 per week will be honoured in this year’s budget.

He also assured that the promised reduction in the tax rate will also be outlined in Brian Cowen's budget speech in December.

Answering questions from Labour leader Eamon Gilmore in the Dáil this morning Mr Ahern said: "The economy is forecast to grow at lower levels than envisaged, but that does not take away from what our commitments are, and we do intend to keep our budget in broad balance."
