Ryan Guy was St Patrick's supersub with a priceless winner on 67 minutes at Terryland Park to move them level on points with second-placed Shamrock Rovers.
Guy struck to break the deadlock on 67 minutes when squeezing home at the back post form Keith Fahey's right wing cross.
Galway had Regi Nootimer sent off for tugging the shirt of Saints' striker Glen Fitzpatrick on 84 minutes.
Gary O'Neill shot the resulting penalty off a post.
