04/09/2007 - 11:46:02Tropical storm Henriette strengthened into a hurricane off Mexico’s Pacific coast today, US forecasters said.
Henriette was packing sustained winds of 75mph and was on a path that would take it near or over Mexico’s southern Baja Peninsula later in the day, the US National Hurricane Centre said.
At 2am PDT (10.00am Irish time) the storm was centred 115 miles south-south-east of the southern tip of Baja California, moving north-north-west at 8mph and expected to start moving more quickly.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to 75mph, a category one strength hurricane.
The Mexican government extended its hurricane warning from Loreto south on the east coast of Baja California, and from Bahia Magdalena south on the west coast, including the resort community of Cabo San Lucas.
