Parents reminded about importance of vaccinations

Parents are being reminded of the importance of vaccinating their children following a recent surge in measles cases in the UK.

The Heath Protection Surveillance Centre says the high frequency of travel between the two countries could result in the disease being imported to Ireland.

Ireland experienced a substantial outbreak of measles in 2000, with more than 1,600 cases reported.

A low uptake of the MMR vaccine was blamed on that occasion.
