Israel allows fuel shipments into Gaza
Israel opened a crossing with the Gaza Strip today to let in fuel, but hundreds of thousands of Palestinians remained without electricity because the European Union wouldn’t fund fuel shipments to a major power company, the fuel vendor said.
The power station’s Israeli fuel supplier said it was instructed by the European Union, which has been footing the fuel bill, not to deliver new supplies because the EU wouldn’t guarantee payment.
“Fuel supplies will resume if and when the European Union or another credible source notifies us that it will guarantee payment for the power station’s fuel,” Israel’s Dor Alon fuel company said in a statement.
EU and Palestinian officials weren’t immediately available for comment.
The Gaza Generating Company, which powers 25% of the coastal strip, shut off three of its four generators on Friday after Israel closed the Nahal Oz fuel crossing, citing security threats it would not detail.
