Climate-change demonstrators step up Heathrow campaign

19/08/2007 - 10:11:00
Climate campaigners in the UK are warning of a day of direct action against Heathrow airport today in the campaign to stop the airport authority building a fifth runway.

Police say they are expecting at least another 2,000 protesters at the makeshift camp near the airport.

Yesterday, seven activists were charged with criminal damage after super-gluing their hands to the Department of Transport building in London.

Metropolitan Police Service commander Jo Kaye says they have outlined their position on peaceful protests with the planners behind the climate campaign, but if protesters are going to break the law, they will be dealt with accordingly.

Police are now claiming that anarchists have joined the climate campaigners at the Heathrow site.

In a direct action campaign the group are expected to "lay siege" to BAA headquarters today.

They will then walk the course the proposed new runway is planned to follow, marking out the ground they have vowed to defend.

An overnight siege to BAA's corporate headquarters is to take place tonight.
