Eriksson celebrates derby win
FT Man City 1 Man Utd 0
Sven-Goran Eriksson emerged victorious from his showdown with Alex Ferguson as City claimed Manchester bragging rights at Eastlands and maintained their 100% start to the season.
Geovanni’s 31st-minute strike ultimately proved decisive but City were indebted to a towering performance from teenage defender Micah Richards who stood firm amid wave after wave of United attacks.
The result means United have picked up just two points from the first three games of their title defence, with major questions marks over their championship challenge just one full week into the season.
Ferguson took his final gamble 18 minutes from time when he brought on John O’Shea and debutant striker Fraizer Campbell for Brown and Carrick.
City had to make a change too as Geovanni departed, Michael Ball coming on in his place.
Richards got in the way of another Giggs cross but the loose ball only fell to Tevez, whose shot flew wide.
Corluka was only just off target with a 35-yard strike before Richards produced another inspired clearance to deny Tevez.
There was just one last chance at salvation as John O’Shea swung over an injury-time corner. A yard out, on his own at the far post, Tevez seemed destined to score.
Ferguson was already celebrating when the striker’s header went wide. It was that type of afternoon for United.
