SF: Harney cannot continue as Minister for Health

09/06/2007 - 16:54:09
Sinn Féin has said today that it will not support any Government in which Mary Harney is the Minister for Health.

It comes as renewed contact is made between Fianna Fáil and the PDs following the breakdown of talks with the Green Party on the formation of the next Government.

At this stage though it remains unclear whether or not a new administration will be formed by next week.

The Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny maintains that he can still form an alternative coalition.

Sinn Féin TD Caoimhmín O'Caolain said it is too early to say who his party will support as Taoiseach, but added that they would not support a Government with Harney in the health portfolio.

"The very notion and idea that Mary Harney, representative of the PDs, would continue at the helm in the health portfolio is in fact a gross insult to the Irish people who have clearly rejected the PDs," he said.
