Woods streak set to continue

28/01/2007 - 22:11:50
Tiger Woods was on course to win his seventh consecutive US Tour title with five holes to play at the Buick Invitational in San Diego today.

The defending champion resumed two behind tour rookies Andrew Buckle and Brandt Snedeker, but completed a superb outward 32 with a 26-foot eagle putt and then almost eagled the long 13th as well.

As he moved to 14 under par with his tap-in, Australian Buckle, who had been two ahead with seven holes remaining, double-bogeyed the 12th and American Jeff Quinney, level with Woods, double-bogeyed the 14th.

The world number one was trying for a third successive victory at the event and had the chance to extend an unbeaten run on the circuit which began with the Open championship at Hoylake last July.

Woods had been seven strokes adrift at halfway, but a bogey-free third round of 69 brought him into the rear-view mirror of the leaders and, like so many before them, they found that a tough position to handle.

Buckle, twice a winner of the world junior title on the same course, was going well until he missed the fairway on the 12th, pushed his second and then flew the green with his pitch.

Quinney outdid Woods with his front-nine 31, but he was bunkered in two on the 14th, left his recovery short of the green and took three more from there.

A 68 from Ian Poulter moved the Englishman from 26th to joint eighth on nine under.
