Record €600m investment for seafood industry
28/01/2007 - 12:21:38The Government has announced a record investment package for the Irish seafood industry.
Nearly €600m will be spent in the next six years in an effort to turn the industry back to profitability.
Announcing the funding, the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern acknowledged the role the sector plays in the Irish economy and said he hoped the new strategy will put the industry on course for a new and profitable future.
The Government hopes that by 2013 Ireland will have a seafood industry that is sustainable and competitive. The Minister for Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey called on the industry to work with the Government to achieve this.
But the package was given a cautious welcome by the Federation of Irish Fishermen who said the details of the plan had yet to be hammered out.
