Monty eyeing Abu Dhabi victory
Colin Montgomerie was looking to secure the first title of his 20th season on the European Tour as the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship got under way today.
Montgomerie, who is 44 in June, is one of the circuit’s elder statesmen and has enjoyed plenty of success during his two decades on the Tour.
He endured a disappointing 2006 on the greens in which he failed to win a single event, despite going closer than ever to ending his major duck at the US Open.
His last win came in the Hong Kong Open at the end of 2005, putting more pressure on the Scot to succeed this season if he is to achieve his goal of pushing back into the world top 10.
He insists that his personal aim each year is no different than when he first started: to continue improving.
“It is more of a challenge to me than it is a problem,” he said.
