Fathi close to Blades move

18/01/2007 - 12:02:36
Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock is due to complete the signing of Egypt midfielder Ahmed Fathi within the next 24 hours.

Fathi will become Warnock’s fifth capture in 11 days following the arrivals of Matthew Kilgallon and Jonathan Stead last week, while Luton Shelton and Mamadou Seck joined United earlier this week.

The 22-year-old Fathi has earned over 40 caps in an international career which includes helping Egypt win the African Nations Cup a year ago when they beat the Ivory Coast on penalties in the final.

“He’s is a nice type of lad who knows what the English game is all about,” said Warnock on Fathi who has recently been playing club football in Egypt with Ismaily.

“He’ll get stuck in, has an eye for a pass, can score a few goals as well, although I’m not going to expect too much of him. You don’t know how quick players will settle in when they come from abroad but he’s coming to the club at the right time. He’ll be a good acquisition to the squad because we do need another midfielder.”
