03/01/2007 - 12:58:12
Globetrotters were given yet another opportunity to spread their wings today when budget airline easyJet announced the start of a scheduled service from Belfast to the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza.

Weekly flights to the Mediterranean island will start on July 7 with return fares, from £53.98 (€80) including taxes and charges. The airline also announced flights to the island from Bristol and Glasgow will be starting in the summer.

David Osborne, UK general manager of the airline said: “To kick off easyJet’s expansion plans for 2007, we are delighted to be announcing three new routes from Belfast, Bristol and Glasgow to Ibiza, bringing even more low-fares to these regions.

“Ibiza has already proved a popular summer destination from many of our other UK bases and now even more holiday-makers seeking fun in the sun or a relaxing break on the famous White Isle can do so easily from their local airport.”

The service is one of nine new routes being launched out of Belfast International Airport in the coming months – and it will be going head to head with Jet2.com’s twice weekly service to Ibiza which is launching seven weeks earlier.

Jet2.com is also launching routes to Toulouse in southern France in April and Palma, Majorca, Malaga on the Spanish mainland, and the Italian city of Milan in May.

easyJet has already announced a new route to Krakow in Poland, starting in April, and Polish airline Wizz Air launches services to Katowice and Warsaw in May and July.

Flyglobespan.com opens up a route to Toronto in May in competition with the Zoom service which has been running since summer 2005.

EasyJet and Jet2.com are the main carriers out of Belfast International and by the summer easyJet will be operating a on a total of 20 routes and Jet2.com another 12.
