Youth group seeks independent monitoring of ASBOs
29/12/2006 - 16:01:10A leading youth organisation is calling for the introduction of ASBOs to be monitored by an independent body.
Minister for Justice Michael McDowell has confirmed that anti-social behaviour orders will come into force for adults on January 1st.
They are also set to be introduced for teenagers from March.
Under the scheme, senior gardaí will be able to ask the courts to prohibit people from certain behaviour.
The YouthWork organisation, which has been campaigning against ASBOs, says it wants the Human Rights Commission or a similar body to be given the power to monitor the initiative to ensure they are not misused against young people.
