Meningitis warning for parents during danger winter period
26/12/2006 - 09:31:36Parents are being warned that the highest number of meningitis cases are often recorded in December and January.
The Meningitis Research Foundation is appealing to parents and young adults in particular to be extra vigilant during these months.
Although anyone of any age can get meningitis, the majority of cases are in under-fives.
Spokesperson Clodagh Brennock says the main symptoms to look out for are fever, vomiting, and a stiff neck in particular if you can't bring your chin down to touch your chestbone.
“A severe headache is another symptom, also a dislike of bright lights, and then as it progresses people can be quite vacant or drowsy and difficult to wake,” she says.
