Patients Focus group barred from attending Neary inquiry

27/11/2006 - 13:54:03
A group representing women who had their wombs removed by disgraced obstetrician Dr Michael Neary has been barred from attending an inquiry related to their cases.

The Medical Council today began a fitness-to-practice review into three consultants who cleared Dr Neary of wrongdoing during a peer review despite the high level of Caesarean hysterectomies he had carried out.

The inquiry committee decided today that the Patients Focus group does not have a direct interest in the hearing and will not be allowed to observe the proceedings.

A spokesperson for the group says the decision was made on the grounds that the women represented by the group were not former patients of the doctors concerned and it would be a breach of the doctors' confidentiality if they were allowed to attend.
