Assembly resumes work after attempted Stormont attack

27/11/2006 - 12:20:40
The Northern Assembly has resumed its work amid tightened security following last Friday's attempted bomb attack at Stormont by loyalist killer Michael Stone.

Opening today's business, Speaker Eileen Bell described the incident as an assault on democracy and said security was being reviewed to examine future police presence, security measures and evacuation procedures.

Ms Bell also paid tribute to the bravery of security staff who tackled Mr Stone and ensured Friday's attack didn't end in tragedy.

On the political front, meanwhile, bickering continues over the British government's decision to accept DUP leader Ian Paisley's refusal to put forward a nominee for the position of First Minister.

The British and Irish governments both say they are happy with Mr Paisley's promise that he will do so once Sinn Féin has endorsed the PSNI and the rule of law.

It remains unclear when Sinn Féin will call a special Ard Fheis to decide on the issue, but reports this morning say the conference is being planned for January, allowing time for an endorsement before the elections planned for March.
