Labour demands Budget direction

25/11/2006 - 09:24:12
Next month’s Budget must include adequate investment in public infrastructure, the Labour Party will say today.

Minister for Finance Brian Cowen is due to deliver his spending plans for 2007 on December 6.

Labour’s finance spokeswoman Joan Burton will today host her party’s pre-Budget seminar in Dublin’s Mansion House.

Speakers at the half-day event include Trinity College law lecturer Ivana Bacik and Prof John Fitzgerald of Government think-tank the Economic and Social Research Institute.

A party spokesman said: “The theme for the seminar is: Investment in Infrastructure and will address personal, capital and physical infrastructure.”

Last night Labour’s social affairs spokesman Willie Penrose called on the Government to give greater powers to local authorities to acquire development land for housing.
